Updated: Oct 6

KUCHING (Oct 25): A bartender was fined RM1,200 in default one month’s jail in the Magistrates’ Court here today for filing a false police report claiming he had been robbed to avoid repaying a debt.

Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan fined Chua Chia Yung, 22, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to six months, or a fine up to RM2,000, or both.

Chua committed the offence at the Kuching District police headquarters around 5.30am on March 4. Based on the facts of the case, Chua lodged a police report stating that he had been mugged by a man, causing him to lose some cash.

The investigation later found the incident was false and never occurred.

It is understood that Chua filed the false report to avoid repaying a gambling debt during Chinese New Year.

The case was prosecuted by Insp Nur Ain Wong while Chua was represented by counsels Ralph Lee and Christopher Bada.
